Joe Markiewicz
IBO since 1987 | Double Diamond

Ask anyone who knows him, and they’ll tell you: Joe
Markiewicz is a guy who loves baseball. “To me, it’s just
a great foundation for life,” he says. “You learn about
discipline, teamwork, perseverance, competition – and
how to overcome your setbacks and disappointments.”
When an injury in college cut short his dream of
becoming a professional player, Joe learned that
sometimes life just isn’t fair. “It is how you handle those
adversities that’s important,” says Joe.
Now as a passionate and devoted coach for his son
Bradley’s baseball team, he shares his life lessons with
the next generation. “I try to teach the kids how to win
and lose gracefully, with dignity and humility, and how
to be emotionally tough and move on when things don’t
go your way.”
Overcoming difficulties is something he talks about in
his AMWAY™ business, too. “I know it can be hard and
I had times when I felt like giving up. But one of the
greatest things I’ve ever done in my life was to not give
up and keep chasing my dreams,” he says.
Joe believes everybody has the potential to be a winner
– in sports and in business. “Champions are not made
when they’re up on the podium holding a trophy,” he
says. “Champions are made very quietly, through the
discipline of getting up every day and working hard
when nobody is looking.”
He feels the same way about succeeding in the
AMWAY business. “What are you doing in your spare
time – watching TV or learning how to compete in
the marketplace?”
Joe has no regrets about the path he’s chosen, or how
he got there. “I never wanted to settle for mediocrity,”
he says. “I remember when I was working as an
engineer, getting up at the same time every morning,
sitting in the same traffic jam every day, thinking, ‘Is this
what I’m supposed to be doing?’”
Today his life is a home run by any measure and his
business gives him all kinds of opportunities to enjoy
his favorite sport: like the memorable day Bradley threw
out the first pitch at the Amway-sponsored Oakland A’s
versus New York Yankee game, Fourth of July weekend
in 2010. And, there are those annual Markiewizc
Freedom Fighter games played in a minor league
baseball stadium, in uniforms, under the lights, with
umps, announcers, scoreboard, the whole deal. “The
guys love it!” he beams.
Looking back on the life he has today versus where he
was headed in college, Joe says simply, “Sometimes
your setbacks are the springboard for even greater
dreams. And that’s what happened to me.”
